Hoi4 Unit Experience Cheat

Hearts of Iron 4 is a complicated game, but hopefully you’re starting to learn the ropes. Our basic tips can help you out with the interface, and check out our motivational lecture on how you really ought to put in the time and energy to learn the game properly. That’s all well and good, but let’s get to the nitty-gritty: unit production and management.

Having just finished yet another Germany game, something definately feels off about unit experience gains.Even after conquering the Soviet Union, India, all of Africa, the UK and finally North America none of my units were better than regular. A couple were close but none made it to even seasoned and it wasn't due to excessive losses. In total I lost something like 500k men and a lot of those were the poor fighter pilots sent to their deaths to contest control over the English Channel.I think it boils down to how experience is gained in the game which is somewhat counterintuitve. Both units and leaders gain experience from being in combat, not from winning the battles, so if you attack head on and grind your way forward (or not at all) your xp gain will likely be much, much higher than if you encircle then enemy and crush them quickly since you overrun so many and battles last hours instead of days or weeks. In an earlier game I sent some volunteers to fight the Chinese and they got all the way to max just by being in battle constantly. This is probably also why you see the Chinese and Japanese with skill 8 or 9 generals slogging it out.Oh, so you drove your tank from Berlin to the Atlantic, back across the the Russian steppes, across the Urals and down to Cape Town?

Well, good for you but you know nothing, Jon Snow! I've been stuck behind the same river for six years taking pot shots at the blokes on the other side, so let me tell you a little something about warfare. The more you fight and the less casualties you take the faster you will generate unit XP.I was playing as the PRC and threw my elite Mountaineer army into forcing their way across a river into some mountains to get into Afghanistan, result was lots of casualties and lots of fighting but not much experience gain (in fact some units lost experience) as the casualties were very high.Pounding my way across Tibet in a curb stomp battle got me way more experience than the grinding battle of death against the Afghans. Both of you make good points, but the counter argument I would think is that a division that has been a division for quite some time, even with casualties, will have veteran soldiers and importantly veteran staff members in it, and because of this the green recruits should 'become' veterans faster. The vets in the division would help keep the greenhorns alive ala 'don't stand there kid' or 'get the hell down' etc. Etc.Elite units like the Grossdeutschland, 101st Airborne, etc.

Got plenty of replacements as the war went on but the vets quickly turned these guys into good soldiers or they died in the process. In my recent Germany game for example, I create a division in '38, that hasn't taken much casualties, but has served in the war against Poland, France, and Russia without becoming at least seasoned, that seems unrealistic. And this was with plenty of battles going on without that many casualties for the amount of time.Again, I think it would be nice to have another 2-3 levels of experience in there to make it feel like your units are progressing a bit more than it feels like now. I would say XP for army and generals needs to be looked at. As a minor its almost impossible to get above regular. Especially when mostly all of your wars will be one sided in your favor.

The faster and better equipped your divisions are the less XP you get for everyone. As Dominican Republic my small band of 5 divisions were elite after war with cuba. Its was kind of long but well balanced on both sides. After that my divisions were superior to everything in the new world including the USA. They lost elite once I added stuff to get them to 20 width and 5 support divisions.

And even after conquering all of central and south america with those same divisions they never once got above regular. My casualties were lucky to exceed 20k in total.By the time I take on USA or Europe the AI divisions wont even be able to hurt my divisions of 780% hardness plus armor that cant be penetrated. So all that means in less combat time and less XP. In my Italy game I am playing now I sent 2 Alpine divisions and a light armor. The 2 Alpines were 90%+ through regular and the LARM just a tad over regular.Within a few months of keeping them in battles both Alpine divisions are Veteran and the LARM is almost there.

The LARM steadily goes up and seldom drops because of low manpower losses but the Alpine division drop to a little over 90% manpower usually during battles and lose half a bar of veteran but get it back next battle.Moral of the story losing a chunk of manpower can seriously impede maintaining experience levels. If it is time only, then best way to train units is fighting with good unit against crappy in bad terrain?

So they can't really harm you, no matter who is attacking, and you need long time to break through their terrain enhanced defense? This makes sense in game, and fits with my observation that Japanese always have astonishingly trained divisions (up to top level). From withstanding hordes of crappy Chinese divisions.Though I wouldn't say it makes any sense in reality. Base exp retention should be much higher, I guess.
